The VelociRaptor hard disk from Western Digital is an expensive but extremely well performing hard disk but is it worth buying? No I would say. I would rather go for a SSD setup instead of VelociRaptor hard disk setup. I am such a fan of solid state drives so I would never consider buying a hard disk with moving parts again. Moving parts are out electrons are in.
The VelociRaptor hard disk is fast when you compare the disk to another WD hard disk. The two WD Green hard disks that I have in my Synology DS211+ does not have the same nice specifications like the VelociRaptor but they are cheaper and they will give you more storage.
The most important VelociRaptor specifications are listed below:
|RPM||Max capacity||Buffer size||SATA version||Price|
|10,000||2000||32 MB||3.0 (6 Gbit/s)||250 US $|
The VelociRaptor is way too expensive to be placed in a NAS and it will not give you much capacity. If I where to have a performance NAS I would rather place two SSD in RAID 0 than two VelociRaptor hard disks in RAID 0. Two VelociRaptor 600 GB hard disks will cost 500 US $ and two 240 GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD will cost 1400 US §.
